Tantalum (Ta)
Estimated 58,300 tonnes of tantalum derived from the 10:1 Nb:Ta ratio present in Venezuelan coltan deposits. Aguamena–Parguaza in Bolívar State hosts one of the most significant coltan occurrences in the Americas, with full reserves yet to be determined.
Tantalum and niobium always occur together in coltan ore at a 10:1 Nb:Ta ratio. At current Ta₂O₅ prices (~$200/kg), the estimated 58,300 tonnes represent $11.66 billion in-ground value. The DRC and Rwanda dominate global supply — Venezuelan deposits offer a conflict-free alternative.
Reserve Calculation
Tantalum and niobium always occur together in coltan (columbite-tantalite) ore. In Venezuelan deposits, the Nb:Ta ratio is approximately 10:1 by weight. Given 583,000 tonnes of probable niobium reserves, the theoretical tantalum content is 58,300 tonnes. At current Ta₂O₅ concentrate prices (~$200/kg), this represents an estimated in-ground value of $11.66 billion USD. Note: the Aguamena–Parguaza coltan deposits have not been fully surveyed — actual reserves may be significantly larger.
The Conflict-Free Alternative
80% of global tantalum originates from Central Africa, plagued by conflict mining and opaque supply chains. The 2010 Dodd-Frank Act Section 1502 requires SEC-reporting companies to disclose conflict mineral sourcing. A Western Hemisphere, sanctions-compliant tantalum source from Venezuela — with full chain of custody via Tier-1 auditors — is designed to be transformative for defense primes, semiconductor manufacturers, and medical device makers who face intense ESG scrutiny.
Aguamena–Parguaza Coltan District
- Located in the Parguaza river basin, Municipio Cedeño, Bolívar State
- Columbite-tantalite (coltan) deposits in Proterozoic granites and pegmatites
- Nb:Ta ratio approximately 10:1 consistent with regional geology
- Full geological survey and reserve certification pending — reserves potentially much larger
- Artisanal mining has confirmed the presence of significant coltan concentrations
- Strategic position: near Puerto Ordaz industrial infrastructure and Orinoco River logistics
Columbite Ore — Raw Nb-Ta Feedstock
Columbite (columbite-tantalite or "coltan") is the primary source ore for both niobium and tantalum. Pricing is based on contained oxide content rather than gross weight: Nb₂O₅ trades at ~$45–50/kg and Ta₂O₅ at ~$180/kg. Combined Pentoxide (CPO) assays determine the commercial value of each lot. Venezuelan columbite from the Parguaza batholith is characteristically low in radioactive impurities (ThO₂, U₃O₈), making it highly desirable for direct smelter processing without costly radioactive materials handling.
